NATIONAL WELD MEET 2014 organized by The Indian Institute of Welding at Kilakarai, Madurai, Tamilnadu, India



The Indian Institute of Welding,Chennai Branch, is organising the NATIONAL WELD MEET 2014 on 05 & 06 Sepetember 2014 at Kilakarai, which is about 60 kms from the holy city of Rameswaram and about 150 kms from Madurai. Mohamed Sathak Engineering College, Kilakarai will host the event. The theme for the event is 'Advances in Science, Technology and Skill Development in Welding'.
As per IIW-India's mandate, the National Weld Meet should be held at a small town or a remote part of the country to promote the art, science and technology of welding in these parts and to encourage the local population to take up welding as a career.
Recognising the wide ranging fabrication activities in Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Madurai,Trichy and  Coimbatore regions, and to create awareness and promote welding as a career,  the Chennai Branch of the Indian Institute ofWelding is organizing the National Weld Meet at the Mohamed Sathak Engineering College, Kilakarai.
The highlight of NWM 2014 is the focus on skill development in welding by dedicating an exclusive parallel session on both the days, to discuss on recent initiatives of the Government of India in Skill development and the opportunities that are available for welders to improve their skills. Traininginstitutes and assessing bodies are also expected to participate in the skill development initiatives of the Government. In the sessions on welding science, emphasis will be on current & future research topics in the area of welding which would be of immense use for research scholars and faculties in Academic and Research Institutes. Session on welding technologies will focus on welding automation, processes, equipments, fabrication, inspection etc. which are relevant to industries. By organizing NWM 2014 at Kilakarai, the Indian Institute of Welding hopes to meet the latest objectives of producing skilled and qualifiedwelding professionals for our Country’s rapid industrialization. 
Practicing welding engineers, technocrats and managers; designers; inspection and qualitycontrol engineers; fabrication engineers from Nuclear, Defence, Space, Chemical and Petrochemical, Oil and Gas, Fabrication, Railways, Surface Transportation, Ferrous and  Non-ferrous manufacturing industries etc, welding consumables and equipments manufacturers, research scholars, academicians and students from engineering colleges, polytechnics, Industrial Training Institutes and Industrial Training Centres can participate in NWM 2014.
To reach Kilakarai by train, you have to get down either at Ramanthapuram or Rameswaram. Train Nos. 16713 and 16101 operate daily from Madras Egmore Railway Station. A number of flights are available from Chennai to Madurai, from where Kilakarai can be reached by road. You are advised to go in for early booking in case you wish to travel by train.

The Indian Institute of Welding (IIW)

The Indian Institute of Welding (IIW-India), a representative body of professional welding engineers in India, is involved in the advancement of welding science and technology within the country by disseminating development and knowledge in the field of welding and allied technology through seminars, workshops training programme etc., providing technical guidance and consultation to industries in welding, conducting associate membership examination and awarding diploma and certificates to members, and publishing technical journals and periodicals in the field of welding. The IIW has been recognized as an Authorised National Body (ANB) to carry out certification programmes of the International Institute of Welding. IIW also conducts its own welder certification programme, the National Welder’sTraining and Certification Scheme (NWTCS). Directorate General of Employment & Training (DGE&T), Government of India, Ministry of Labour & Employment has empanelled IIW-India as an “Assessing Body” for MES courses under Skill Development Initiative (SDI) Scheme for all courses under FabricationSectors in all States and Union Territories in India.

The Chennai Branch of IIW, formed in 1973, has made good progress over the years with respect to membership, technical programmes etc, due to the unstinted support of industries in the region and selfless efforts of various members and office bearers. Today the Branch has over 400 members and 25 Industrial Corporate members. The Branch organizes technical meetings every month, courses and seminars of topical interest and visits to important projects. With our country in the midst of a quantum leap to industrialization, the Branch hopes to contribute effectively towards improved productivity, cost effectiveness and quality enhancement to the welding fraternity in particular and industries in general. The Chennai Branch constantly audits its position and develops strategic plans to meet the latest objectives of our Country’s development.

Mohamed Sathak Trust - The Host

The Mohamed Sathak Trust, which is a charitable and educational organization, was established on 26 October 1973 at Madras, by the Philanthropic Mohamed Sathak Family of Kilakarai, Ramnad District, Tamil Nadu, with the sole purpose of helping deprived people from rural and financially challenged background to quality education. From the day the first self-financing engineering college in the state was established by the Trust in 1984 at Kilakarai, the Trust has been contributing to provide quality education with academic excellence to meet the requirements of industries at national and international levels.

The Trust administers 20 schools and colleges in Kilakarai, Ramnad and Chennai. The  whole gamut of higher education from arts and science to physiotherapy and nursing to engineering to medical sciences to IAS training is covered under the Trusts’ operation. In the Trust, we believe that with malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, we strive on to finish the work we are in, to build up our nation’s needs.

Mohamed Sathak Engineering College (MSEC) was the first ever self-financing Engineering Collegeestablished in Tamil Nadu in the year 1984. Mohamed Sathak Engineering College has dedicated itself to impart quality education and develop the students to be responsible engineers and leaders of our nation. The college offers 10 undergraduate and seven post graduate courses in engineering and architecture.

Mohamed Sathak Polytechnic College, Kilakarai is a Government Aided and AICTE approved Co-educational institute sponsored by Mohamed Sathak Trust, Chennai. The college offers Diploma in 7 branches of engineering. On 23 June 2014, the Mohamed Sathak Advanced Welding Institute was inaugurated on its campus.

Mohamed Sathak A. J. College of Engineering, Chennai, was started in 2001. It is sponsored by the Mohamed Sathak Trust, Chennai and is affiliated to the Anna University. It is a co-educational institution with the noble aim of imparting quality technical education to produce high quality engineers, technologist and managers to meet the requirement of industries at national and international levels. The college campus, sprawling over 70 acres of greenery, is adjacent to SIPCOT IT Park, Siruseri. The college offers 8 undergraduate and 6 post graduate courses.

National Weld Meet 2014

The structured liberalisation of our economy, which has paved the way for globalisation of our industry, has had an enormous impact on core sectors such as power, steel, oil, gas, petro-chemical and transportation. It is but natural that globalization impacts small and medium scale industries, which support the core sectors. Indian industry currently operates on benchmarks and quality levels fixed by a global perspective. There is therefore an imperative need for the manufacturers to improve quality by effecting improvements in design, materials and manufacturing processes at reduced cost. Since welding is the most widely used engineering manufacturing process, the welding industry is also poised for a vibrant change due to the need to introduce high productivity welding processes, cost effective designs and reliable quality control methods. Also, there is an enormous demand for certifiedwelding personnel both at the welders’ and engineers’ levels to meet the primary manpower needs of the industry. In addition, there is the need for continual training and knowledge up gradation at all levels.
